A research conducted not long ago suggests that older and disabled people including their carers from the BME communities of England are not accessing or engaging with services as they should, this is more so with disabled and older people from African communities who are one of the hardest to reach groups in the country.
There are 6.5 million people in the UK giving unpaid care to friends or family, and this number is rising . Many unaware of their rights, leaving millions of pounds of carers’ benefits to go unclaimed
It is very common in African societies for people to care for disabled and older people in the communities and many people will care for their loved ones without even thinking they can be rewarded or paid for it.
